If the Earth Wasn't Round

These handmade, unique ceramic pieces are part of an ongoing series titled If the Earth Wasn’t Round. Inspired by the shifting colours of the Alentejo dams — where the I live — and by nostalgia for her birthplace, Madeira Island, the works reflect an ever-changing dialogue between water and land.

Through a meticulous process, I seek to capture the hues and movements of water and earth by embracing the natural behaviour of clay. Each abstract ceramic landscape is shaped by chance and accident, resulting in distinct and singular forms.

The colours emerge from natural oxides—minerals drawn from the earth—which, when fired onto clay, produce organic and unpredictable results. Each tone originates directly from the earth itself.
